Cross Track Infrared Sounder (CrIS)
ITT has a contract to develop an advanced instrument that will significantly improve weather forecasting and climate prediction. The National Polar orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) will revolutionize the meteorological space program using ITT's Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS). CrIS will measure a vertical distribution of temperature, moisture, and pressure in the atmosphere. It will help both short-term weather "nowcasting" and long-term forecasting. Its infrared sensors providing high-resolution data that will even assist in understanding El Niño and other major climate shifts.
