  Frequently Asked Questions

What is ITT ANGEL Services?
ITT's Airborne Natural Gas Emission Lidar (ANGEL) Services is a comprehensive airborne natural gas leak detection survey that precisely pinpoints natural gas pipeline emissions and provides the customer with a comprehensive end-to-end pipeline summary. This industry leading analysis includes:
  • Leak Survey Reports and Geospatial Information System (GIS) datasets,
  • Orthomosaic mapping imagery, and
  • Color Digital Video with Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates.

How does ANGEL Services detect and measure leaks?
ANGEL Services utilizes a patented airborne Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) laser sensor that detects, images, and maps natural gas leaks from natural gas pipeline and facilties. The DIAL sensor illuminates the pipeline right-of-way with mid-wave infrared (MWIR) laser pulses tuned for the detection of methane. The concentration of gas in the laser path is calculated by comparing a reference laser pulse with the laser pulse tuned for methane.

Does ANGEL Services meet regulatory requirements?
Yes. ANGEL Services was developed with the help of pipeline companies, industry trade associations and federal agencies, including the Department of Energy and the Department of Transportation, to meet regulatory requirements such as 192.706 and 192.615 set forth by the code of federal regulations.

Where is ITT's ANGEL Services offered?
Currently the service is offered in North America.

Are there environmental factors that affect ANGEL Services findings/operation?
Because the ANGEL Services system uses laser energy to detect natural gas plumes, the service can reliably operate over all terrains in all seasons — including snow cover and wet grass. The only limitations for operation include heavy fog, high winds, and heavy precipitation.

How many miles of pipeline can ANGEL Services survey in a day?
ANGEL Services can survey up to 1,000 miles per day — accomplishing in one week what would take a walking crew more than one year to inspect and with greater performance and accuracy.

What is the smallest leak that ANGEL Services can detect?
Under normal operating conditions flying at 750 ft and 120 MPH, ANGEL Services can reliably survey and detect gas emissions as small as 2 scfm.

What is needed to get started with ANGEL Services?
The first step is to contact the ANGEL Services Team at 585-269-5121. Next you simply provide the ITT ANGEL Services Team with detailed GPS data within 10 meters and alignment sheets of your company's pipeline and/or facility that you would like inspected. The ANGEL Services team utilizes the provided GPS coordinates to point, scan, and precisely track your natural gas pipeline.

Are the ITT ANGEL Services personnel operator qualified?
Yes. All ITT ANGEL Services Team members have proper trainings and certifications in their areas of operation. ANGEL Services is a fully ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified operation.

Does your pilot need to fly directly over the pipeline to detect emissions?
No. Because ANGEL Services uses a patented aiming and scanning system that automatically accounts for plane position and orientation, the aircraft does not need to be directly over the pipeline. The sensor uses your supplied GIS pipeline data to guide the pilot and electronically point the sensor.

At what altitude does the ANGEL Services aircraft operate?
The aircraft flies approximately between 500 feet to 1500 feet above ground and collects data at an average speed of 120 miles per hour.

Why does ITT use such a broad scan pattern?
ANGEL Services utilizes a 100' wide scan pattern to ensure all gas emissions are detected that could migrate underground away from the leak site or whose position is altered by above ground wind patterns.

How am I certain my pipeline was surveyed?
ITT delivers, based on your provided GPS coordinates, the location of every laser pulse which hit the earth in relation to your pipeline. Because of our broad 100' wide swath and the patented pointing system, ITT guarantees better than 99% pipeline centerline coverage. A detailed report is provided of the exact location of your pipeline and the areas of coverage.

What are the advantages of ANGEL Services?
ITT's ANGEL Services is more productive and thorough than other offerings in the energy industry. ANGEL Services offers the industry's most comprehensive airborne leak detection, along with corridor mapping imagery and digital color video, ensuring that you receive the most complete end-to-end pipeline summary available. With guaranteed results.
